To commence your journey in woodwork, there are a few tools that you must have to shape your visions into tangible creations. Here, I am going to focus on hand tools that the beginner woodworker through to the seasoned craftsman may need in the workshop.
1. Workbench. A sturdy and flat surface to work on. It could be a folding plastic table (not very sturdy), some lengths of timber between saw horses (a plain old door works well as the work surface), a discarded dining room table or a purpose build bench are some ideas
2. Measuring and Marking Tools:
Pencils - use a pencil with a firm lead (2H is my preference). A regular lead, mechanical or builders pencil.
Eraser - sometimes there is a need to remove your setting out.
Tape measure or rule in your units of preference (millimetres or inches)
A combination square allows you to mark timber out for square and mitre cuts
Marking knife - a snap off utility knife does the job
3. Cutting Tools:
Tenon saw for making straight cuts into timber
Coping saw for curved cuts
4. Shaping and Smoothing Tools:
Chisel
Block plane
Card scraper
5. Joinery Tools:
Mallet or hammer
6. Finishing Tools:
Sanding blocks
Scraper
Paint brushes
Each category comprises a range of tools that serve specific purposes within the woodworking process. Depending on the project and the desired level of precision, woodworkers may require tools from one or more of these categories to achieve their desired results. Remember to choose quality tools, maintain them properly, and prioritize safety when engaging in woodworking activities.
